April 2024 Happenings

While the saying "in like a lamb, out like a lion" is often associated with March weather, we think it fits this winter's pattern. Looking back at November & December, warmer-than-average temperatures with a few storms only left a few inches of snow, and ice skating in the meadow was better than cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. January started delivering enough snow to get our skis gliding on a few trails, and by the end of the month, we were up on the hills and ridges with 20+ trails open. February finally brought the big storms, and by mid-month, we were almost 100% open, which included groomed trails down to Tamarack. March started with a bang, and besides one sunny weekend, we've had a consistent run of small and large storms. While storms are not great for business on the weekends, adventurous skiers and snowshoers enjoyed the fresh snow. Finally, a playful Easter Adventure while lightly snowing proved magical for the families.

The Bear Valley Adventure Company (BVAC) has set a projected closing date for groomed trails and tubing for Sunday, April 28th, 2024. Of course, this is weather and snow-dependent, but we try to ski and recreate in the snow for as long as possible. To quote Paul Petersen, the previous owner, "The meadow is the ultimate decider for the closing day," aka flooding in the meadow from snowmelt, is the typical factor that closes our trail system.

BVAC is offering complimentary season passes to all third graders. Children currently enrolled in the third grade receive a 2023/2024 season pass good for the rest of this winter. Those entering third grade next school year receive a 2024/2025 pass, good for this season and next. Meanwhile, our regular season passes are on sale through April and are valid for the remainder of this season. If you still need to add cross country skiing or snowshoeing to your winter repertoire, now is a great time to expand your Bear Valley horizons and learn why our small alpine hamlet is one of the finest snowsports destinations. It's a winter wonderland in Bear Valley!
