July 2024 Happenings

Summer arrived right on schedule in Bear Valley. By July 4th, hiking and biking trails were clear of snow and debris, all lakes were accessible, including Highland Lakes, and the wildflowers were giving a fantastic display of diversity and color. Minus a healthy mosquito bloom, which will dissipate in the coming weeks, the Bear Valley Adventure Company (BVAC) is excited for the summer season ahead.

Summer heatwaves are real, and Bear Valley is not insulated from them. The sun feels intense when thermometers at 7000 ft. start reading 80+ºF. Increasing your fluid intake and applying sunscreen often is essential. Sun protection clothing, including hats, long-sleeve shirts, and pants, is another excellent option. Fortunately, our store has plenty of sun-protecting items, including a complimentary water bottle refilling station, so you can stay safe and enjoy your outdoor adventures.

Timing outdoor activities is another tactic to avoid the effects of heat. If you know you will exert a lot of effort, take advantage of cool mornings and late afternoons. A midday break in the shade or jumping in a lake are also great ways to cool off.

While outdoor activities can feel warmer at high altitudes, there is also an advantage at 7000 feet as temperatures cool quickly at night since there is less atmosphere to retain the heat. This means you can enjoy the warmth of the day and the cool of the night. Opening windows at night and closing them in the morning often helps maintain cooler temperatures indoors during the day.

In short, implementing a few heat-avoiding strategies makes Bear Valley the ideal summer destination. But you already knew that. Cheers!
