January 2022 Happenings

Winter arrived with a bang, and right in the middle of Christmas! While the first half of the holiday season was spent mitigating snow, the sun finally came out, and skiers, snowshoers, sledders, and tubers arrived in force. The weather forecast shows a clearing trend for January, so now is a great time to enjoy all the winter activities that Bear Valley offers.

The BVAC store has been bust servicing guests with robust cross-country ski sales. Fortunately, we received most of our winter equipment orders, so if you are considering a purchase or upgrading your skis, boots, or poles, we recommend visiting us while inventory is still strong. We expect some additional gear shipments in the Spring but given supply chain disruptions, who knows what and when these items will arrive.

The 49th Annual Bjornloppet XC Ski Race Festival is happening on February 12-13, 2022. This weekend is full of excitement, camaraderie, and appropriate for all ages and abilities. A new 5K course will be offered on Saturday for those either just getting into the sport or looking for something less daunting than the iconic 10K and 20K courses.  Visit our website for details, and volunteers are welcomed.

A parting thought … a common sentiment we hear is that cross country skiing looks too difficult. Sure, this applies when viewing Olympic athletes. Still, on any given day, we see everything from conditioned athletes to multi-generational families skiing on our trails while enjoying the serenity and solitude of winter. The Bear Valley trail system is extra special, with a trailhead in the meadow with beginner trails at the start, then hills nearby for the intermediate and advanced skiers. The take-home message is cross-country skiing is what you make of it, and at the end of the day, your life will be a little richer, and your overall skiing skills enhanced when you include a little cross country skiing to your Bear Valley experience. Cheers!
