It doesn’t happen often, but on November 21st, 2020 we opened 9 kilometers of trails, a week earlier than projected. Cold temperatures and a shallow but dense snowpack enabled cross country skiers and snowshoes to enjoy groomed trails in the meadow. Over Thanksgiving, we added more terrain, bringing the total to 12.5 kilometers. Smiles were abundant at BVAC. Opening trails early is not easy, but it provided excellent training and allowed us to test winter COVID precautions. We now feel ready for the winter season; just add snow!
The Bear Valley Adventure Company received more good news in November when awarded 2nd place in the USA Today Readers’ Choice for Best Cross Country Ski Resort in North America. With great terrain at both the downhill ski area and the cross country center, spectacular scenery and fewer crowds, Bear Valley is truly one of the best places to ski. But of course, you already knew that ;-). Thanks for your votes!
As the winter season gets underway, a common question for new cross-country skiers is whether to try classic or skate skiing. In general, for those new to skiing, the classic style (aka striding or traditional) is more appropriate for learning the skills of balance, sliding, and stopping. Classic skiers can simply walk in their skis or pick up the tempo and include a glide. The Bear Valley meadow is an ideal place to learn with scenic and forgiving terrain. Bigger hills are nearby for those seeking a challenge. Many accomplished skiers have been humbled by the black diamond cross country trails at Bear Valley.
For those already possessing good skiing skills and seeking speed, excitement and a workout, skate skiing is the preferred option. Skate skiers use their skis in a V-formation to generate speed, similar to ice skating or inline skating. Skate skis are narrower and shorter than classic skis and require additional balance. In general, skate skiers move faster, and many alpine skiers find skate skiing exhilarating and a great way to improve their overall fitness and balance. Regardless of which discipline you choose, we look forward to seeing new and experienced skiers out on the Bear Valley Adventure Company trails system this winter.
